Laminate flooring is a common flooring choice today. The reason for this is due to it being relatively inexpensive and very functional and durable. And laminate flooring is even installed in higher-end homes today, in competition with the look and feel and durability of solid hardwood flooring. Over time, the innovations in these laminate flooring products have them looking better, performing better and feeling better under one’s feet than ever before.
So what is laminate flooring? Laminate flooring is a hybrid floor consisting of a wood composite or particleboard wood (pressed wood) topped by an image layer and wear layer, which are made from synthetic materials.
Laminate flooring is highly durable and easy to maintain. And looks great! Consequently, you can see laminate flooring laid in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways, and even kitchens and bathrooms.
For those areas which have moisture issues such as the kitchen and bathroom, laminate flooring is absolutely a viable choice. Some laminate is water resistant (semi-waterproof) where others are made to be waterproof.
Our team can install your non-allergenic, affordable, durable and beautiful flooring in just about any room of your house.
Vinyl flooring or LVP (Luxury Vinyl Planks) are often confused for laminate flooring. In fact, those terms (laminate and vinyl) are used interchangeable by many people today, since they are closely related. The main difference is that laminate is more often water resistant while vinyl flooring is known to be waterproof. But there are variations of both. So the qualities of each specific product should be reviewed.
To be clear, both laminate and vinyl are durable, affordable, great looking, and water resistant (plus). This is why many people choose these products – either laminate flooring or vinyl flooring.

Carpeting is obviously a tried and true form of floor covering. It’s generally the least expensive way to get your floors done. Of course, like any product, there are more expensive types of carpet. As with any flooring, the sky can be the limit. But in the typical range of flooring options, carpeting is your least expensive route.
The other advantages of carpeting include having a warmer floor, as it generally retains warm air longer and can be thicker (depending on your choice of carpet). There can be an energy efficiency factor with carpet as well. Laying or sitting on a carpeted floor is often more comfortable and gives you a warmer feel than other types of flooring. (With other flooring, laying an area rug is an option however.)
Carpeting can also help reduce noise as it tends to do a better job at stifling resonant sounds and echoes in and around it. So you may consider issues of footsteps, people talking, music, gaming, and entertainment being used.
There are a lot of varieties of carpet. So you can certainly consider more colors, patterns, designs, styles, length of cut, etc. than with the other styles of flooring. Obviously, it’s more unique than the other options.
If chosen strategically, a carpet can hide dirt more easily to the naked eye. Thus, your home may more often look cleaner and well kept.
With carpeting, you should be aware that it will wear out over time, and show wear and tear sooner than other options, on the average. The amount of foot traffic on any flooring is a significant issue of course. But the life expectancy of carpet is generally less than the life expectancy of hardwood, laminate, vinyl or tile flooring.
And certain areas of your home simply don’t go well with carpeting. Kitchens, bathrooms and other high traffic and moisture drawing areas would be better served with those other options (laminate flooring, vinyl flooring, tile flooring, hardwood flooring).
Hardwood flooring is typically your most expensive option. Wood flooring is the most durable, even lasting for generations, in regard to normal wear and tear. Over long periods of time, there arises the issue of refinishing the surface of the wood, but generally that is over an extensive period of time.
Hardwood floors are easier to clean than other types of flooring. So issues of having pets or children come into play. For the pets, if they have fluid accidents, then hardwood is easier to clean up. But if your pet has nails, then those may scratch the hardwood. (If your pet has nails, then no matter what flooring you get, there will be an issue for you, honestly!) With hardwood floors, clean up is generally a quick matter of sweeping and/or mopping.
In comparison, carpeting will generally need replacement three to six times before your hardwood floor should need repair or refinishing. Of course, the actual use, wear, tear, pets, traffic, etc. all come into play.
And although hardwood flooring is the most expensive flooring option, it can actually be the most cost effective overall, as it should give the greatest increase to your home’s value. So either the hardwood flooring will net you a greater sales price, or it will net you a quicker sale as the hardwood is a very attractive feature to most people.
Carpeting can go in and out of style. But hardwood flooring basically does not. It may not be what a particular person wants at a particular time, but overall, the hardwood will not be unfashionable or unpopular.
Also, hardwood flooring can either be solid wood or engineered wood, which increases the look and feel options of the this flooring. And although even more expensive, there are exotic hardwood options to choose from to set your home or other space apart.
And if allergies are an issue for you, then hardwood flooring (or laminate flooring, vinyl flooring or tile flooring) is a good option to minimize the effects of allergens. A quick damp cloth mopping of your hardwood should remove any lingering allergens.
Over a long period of time, a hardwood floor can develop a layer of dust and grime, which if unkept (swept and mopped) will turn or look dark brown or black. This can be removed. The process of refinishing hardwood entails sanding off a light top layer, and then sealing it, with or without staining it. This will bring out the natural look of the wood grain again.
The wood is still fully functional. And with refinishing, it is now back to its great look and feel and warm ambience.
Tile flooring comes in various materials including ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles, glass tiles, marble tiles, granite tiles, and natural stone tiles, such as limestone or quarry tile. There are grouted and grout-less options.
Tile flooring is usually less expensive than the full hardwood flooring option. But this option can get expensive as well, depending on the material you choose and the desire for any intricacy of patterns.
